A temporary departure from his chosen mode of art making, this drawing is one of my favourites. It depicts one Will Donnelly, eldest son of the Donnelly family of Lucan, Ontario in the late 1800s (known popularly as the Black Donnellys).
This piece was meant as a representation of/for my song “Will and Margaret” on the recording of songs Steve and I made with friends in 2006 (Into the Water).
Each song on that recording had a visual companion, created by Steve, and depicted on the cover of the CD.
As far as Will Donnelly goes, I never did ask Steve why he chose to draw rather than paint for that song. This hangs in my and Maureen’s living room.
